2011 EPICUG Christmas Party

Fractal Snow FlakesEPICUG will hold it’s annual Christmas Party Wednesday December 14 in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Public Library.  The party will begin one hour earlier than our regular meetings, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.  Food and refreshments will be provided.  Come join us for a fun-filled evening.  Bring a URL for the FIT (Funniest Internet Thing) Contest and also a White Elephant Tech Gift for exchange.  This year there will be one business item at the party, EPICUG members will elect 2012 Officers.  Please join us in the Hondius Room at 6:00 and Merry Christmas!

EPICUG Meeting – iThing Continued + Browser Wars

Steve Jobs using iPhone in front of iOS5 icon on large screenThe Estes Park Internet Computer User Group will meet Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00 PM in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Public Library.  This month, we will continue the discussion started in October regarding iOS5 devices and iCloud services for both Windows and Mac users.  This time (it’s been confirmed) we are definitely meeting in the Hondius Room and will have use of the projector.  We’ll end the meeting with a comparison of different web browsers: IE, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.  Why use one over the others and when.  Please join us at the Library. At this months Mac Users Group meeting we will explore some of the less exciting, but nonetheless great things you can do with your Mac. Features that you may not have realized are there, but once you’ve had a taste, you’ll swear they’re “essential.” Bring your discoveries and tips to the discussion.

DISIG Meeting – High Dynamic Range Photography

HDR City ImageThe Digital Imaging Special Interest Group (DISIG) will be meeting in the Al Wasson Room on the Upper Level of the Estes Valley Public Library this Thursday, October 27 at 7:00 pm.  Due to the connectivity limitations in the Wasson Room we will not yet be discussing iOS Camera Apps as originally planned.  Instead, we will discuss and view a Lynda.com presentation on High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography, a method increasing the range of light and dark in a photograph, avoiding glare while maintaing details in shadows.  This method of photography is only feasible as a result of digital imaging.  If you have examples of HDR photographs, please bring them to share with the group.  All EPICUG meetings and presentations are free and open to the public.  Please join us Thursday evening in the Wasson Room.

EPICUG – iPhone 4s and iOS 5 for Windows and Mac Users

Steve Jobs using iPhone in front of iOS5 icon on large screenThe Estes Park Internet Computer User Group will meet Wednesday, October 19 at 7:00 PM in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Public Library.  This month, members of EPICUG with iOS5 devices (iPhones and iPads) will demonstrate iCloud services for Windows and Mac users.  If you haven’t seen iPhones and iPads in action, you’ll want to see what they can do with iOS5.  If all goes as planned, we’ll be demonstrating the new Siri features (voice driven artificial intelligence) of the new iPhone 4s.  Please join us at the Library.  All EPICUG meetings are free and open to the public.

Mac User Group Meeting – Lion Essential Training

Lion GraphicThe Mac User Group will meet in the Hondius Room of the Estes Park Public Library on Monday, October 3 at 7:00 PM.  This is the eve of the big iPhone announcement.  We’ll discuss the rumors, but we’ll also delve into the Lynda.com presentation “Lion Essential Training.”

In this course, Macworld senior editor Chris Breen provides a comprehensive overview of Mac OS X Lion, complete with insider tips for getting the most out of the operating system.  The course shows how to configure system preferences, personalize the interface, and master gestures, as well as achieve fluency with applications such as Mail, iCal, and Preview.  The course also includes tutorials on browsing the web with Safari, automating complex tasks with Automator, sharing over a network, and performing maintenance operations using the disk utility, along with timesaving techniques for using the Mac efficiently.

DISIG Meeting – Making Time Square

Bert Monroy painting on a pen tablet - Time Square painting in backgroundIn 2010, the digital artist Bert Monroy unveiled his Photoshop painting “Time Square” a 5 foot tall by 25 foot wide image of New York City. This extremely detailed image is not photographic, it is a “painting”, created from scratch in Photoshop over the course of 4 years. The flattened image file is over 6 gigabytes and was composited from 500,000 different Photoshop layers. In this Lynda.com video presentation, Mr. Monroy demonstrates and explains the various techniques used to create his masterpiece. EPICUG Meeting – Gmail Essential Training

The meeting is open to members and non-members alike. This month’s program is a Lynda.com training video – the video introduction is located at http://www.lynda.com/home/Player.aspx?lpk4=81112&playChapter=False – Gmail Essential Training.

In Gmail Essential Training, Google Apps trainer Susan Cline demonstrates how to streamline the communication process using this web application’s advanced and hidden features. The course shows how to create filters to manage the flow of messages and demonstrates Gmail’s powerful search function, which can find messages with just a click. It also describes how to customize the inbox to match any communication style, and organize names and email addresses using the Contact Manager.

Topics include:  Navigating through conversations; Utilizing various search techniques; Controlling the flow of incoming messages with filters; Creating and applying labels and filters to organize the inbox; Importing and exporting contacts; Responding directly to emails with live chat messages; Using the built in voice and video chat features; Reporting spam to train the spam filter; and Navigating Gmail Help and the Help forum.

DISIG Meeting – Digital Imaging on a Budget

Pixelmator and Arboard icons in the Mac OS X DockAdobe Photoshop and Illustrator are great software packages for digital imaging, but they are quite expensive.  These large programs also require high-end hardware to run smoothly.

At this months Digital Imaging Special Interest Group (DISIG) meeting, we will look at more affordable alternative.  We will specifically examine Pixelmator and Artboard for pixel-based and vector-based graphics respectively.  At only 5% of the cost, this software offers compelling alternatives and few nice surprises too.
