1998 Meeting Announcements and Notes
December 98 Meeting: Christmas Party &
Election of Officers
To celebrate the holidays and get ready for 1999, we'll have a Christmas
Party and Election of Officers at the Hondius Room, Estes Park
Public Library, Tuesday December 15, 1998 7:00PM.
We'll have food and goodies so come hungry. The sponsor of the Christmas
treats this year is Estes Park On-Line.
There will be the obligatory computer discussion like "Stump the
Group" with your questions, "My favorite Site(s)" where you share a web
address that you think is cool, and the timely gift giving topic of "What to buy and
where on-line".

On Wednesday, September 16, 1998, the EPICUG will meet at the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M.
Mike Molloy will lead a discussion about the importance of backing up
your computer system, back up hardware, software, and media, backup strategies, data vs.
total backups, restore and recovery, critical system file backups, online backup services,
off-site storage.
Mike is EPICUG vice-president and
owner of Mountain Data Systems, a small business
focused on small computer/business consulting, web site development, desktop publishing,
and graphics production.

June '98 Meeting: Secure Internet
Commerce
On Thursday, June 18, 1998, the EPICUG will meet at the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M.
Don Widrig, an EPICUG member and local resident, will give a
presentation on "Is It Safe To Use The Internet For Commerce?"
His presentation will cover: Internet commerce and associated risks; cryptography, its
history and theory; and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology and how it can be used to
secure Internet commerce.
Mr. Widrig holds a BSEE from MIT, and has over thirty years of
experience in a variety of R&D, management, leadership, and problem solving positions,
all involving high technology computer-based systems, primarily of a specialized nature.
He has worked as a consultant and trainer in a variety of technology engineering firms,
serving both private industry and the Department of Defense. He may be the only Estes Park
resident who knows and has worked with Ed
Yourdon, one of the lead developers of the structured analysis/design methods of the
1970s and a co-developer of the Yourdon/Whitehead method of object-oriented
analysis/design.
As always, there will be time for Q&A, including the popular
"Stump The Group" session.

April '98 Meeting: How to Get on the
Internet
On Tuesday, April 21, 1998, the EPICUG will meet at the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M. Lee Lasson, owner of Estes
Park On-Line, will demonstrate how to get on the Internet. Lee will discuss selecting
and connecting to an Internet Service Provider. Lee will also demonstrate Microsoft
FrontPage 98 and how easy it is to create and maintain a web site for your business. If
you are new to the Internet, this meeting is for you. The user group will allow time for
your questions by playing "Stump the Group!" so please bring your Internet and
computer related questions.

March '98 Meeting: Fiber Optics
On Tuesday, March 24, 1998, the
EPICUG will meet at Estes Park Public Library
in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M. Lowell
Krandell will talk about his career in the Telecommunications Industry specifically
focusing on fiber optic technology. Lowell earned a BSEE Communications Option from
Indiana Institute of Technology and spent nearly 30 years in the Telecommunication
Industry working mostly with General Telephone Company (GTE). He designed Indiana's first
three fiber optics systems. He also designed the first fiber optics network to connect all
major Indiana colleges and universities. Lowell managed fiber optics technical development
for seven midwestern states within the GTE System. He served as the Vice Chair of the
Metallic Interface Committee for the American National Standards Institute. Lowell was
responsible for evaluating and testing all fiber optics electronic products for acceptance
by GTE.
Fiber optics communications
technologies have made the Internet possible. Come join us for Lowell's presentation. We
will also follow with a question and answer session called "Stump the Group" so
bring your computer and Internet questions!
February '98 Meeting: Stump The Group!
On Monday, February 23, 1998, the EPICUG will meet at the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M. The
topic for the evening is an open discussion of computers and the Internet. Bring your
questions! Are you old enough to remember Johnny Carson's "Stump The Band?" See
if you can stump the collective expertise of the Users Group!

January '98 Meeting: Kids and the
Internet - Meeting Notes!
On Tuesday, January 13, 1998, the EPICUG will meet at the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M. The
topic for the evening will be Kids and the
Internet, presented by Mike Molloy, an
area resident and owner of Mountain Data Systems.
During the meeting, Mike will discuss what the internet has to offer
children and parents, and the pros and cons of our children using the internet. Using an
internet-connected computer, Mike will surf to, demonstrate, and discuss: web guides for
parents, educational web sites; and research/homework help sites. We will also discuss
rules/tips for online safety and control/monitoring tools parents can use to help manage
childrens internet access.
The evenings topic is primarily for parents, but everyone,
including children are welcome. Mike Molloy is not only an experienced web user and
developer, but also a parent and grandfather. If you have questions about Kids and
the Internet, or your own tips, tricks, or experiences, please bring them and
share with the group!
