1997 Meeting Announcements and Notes
December '97: Christmas
Social/Meeting - Meeting Notes!
On Wednesday, December 17, 1997, the EPICUG will meet at the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M. The group
will have a casual Christmas Social/Party.
We'll have food and drink for all but you'll need to RSVP with the
number in your party to lee@on-line.com or call
586-4760. Bring a friend and/or your significant other!
The meeting will focus on using the Internet to find information,
shopping on-line, and finding fun Christmas web sites. Please bring a web address of
something you would like to share with the group.
Again, please RSVP so that we'll
have an idea on how much food to get!
Also, we will be starting our 1998 membership drive. You can join
EPICUG for only $12 for 1998 at the Christmas Party! Don't miss the fun!
Happy Holidays from EPICUG!
Be sure to note our 1998 Meeting Schedule!
November '97: Tips & Tricks
On Monday, November 19, 1997, the EPICUG will meet at
the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M. The
evening's presentation will be an informal exchange Tips & Tricks among members (good
idea, Ernie!) moderated by Lee Lasson. Here are some Meeting
notes prepared by Gary Oliver and Mike Molloy.
September '97: Not Technically
Speaking
On Monday, September 29, 1997, the EPICUG will meet at
the Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00 P.M. The
Internet Computer User Group will focus a meeting for new users. We pledge to not
"techno-speak", but try our best to explain this new on-line world in plain
English. Not Technically Speaking is harder than you may expect as so many words are made
up as the technologies have evolved. This meeting promises to be educational to new users,
and especially challenging to experienced users because it isn't easy to explain technical
stuff in non-technical terms. If you have an interest in computers and the Internet but
are lost in the techno-babble, this meeting is for you!
August '97: First Look at
Internet Explorer 4 and FrontPage 98
On Wednesday, August 20, 1997, the EPICUG
will meet at Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room at 7:00
P.M.
Lee Lasson
will be demonstrating the new preview release of Microsoft
Internet Explorer 4.0 beta. Lee will
also demonstrate the new Microsoft FrontPage 98 beta which can be downloaded free and used
until 12/31/97. Microsoft FrontPage 98
enables users to create and maintain a web site without knowing any HTML or programming.
There will also be plenty of time also for your Internet and computer questions.
July '97: Creating
a web site using FrontPage 97
On Wednesday, July 16, 1997, the
EPICUG will meet at Estes Park Public Library in the Hondius Room
at 7:00 P.M. Lee Lasson will show how to create a web site using Microsoft FrontPage 97. FrontPage runs on both PCs
and Macs. With the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) of FrontPage you don't need to
know any HTML. Lee will demonstrate how to create a web site including hyperlinks,
inserting images, creating tables, creating forms, and using frames. There will be plenty
of time also for your Internet and computer questions.
June '97: The Internet
and Gold Rush Coffee
On Wednesday, June 25, 1997, the EPICUG will meet at Gold Rush
Coffee, 251 West Riverside (near the post office) at 7:00 P.M. The meeting will start with
an introduction to Gold Rush Coffee by Tom Hamann and Lynn Roberts, co-owners of Gold Rush
Coffee. You can learn more about their business on their web site at http://www.goldrushcoffee.com/.
Following the Gold Rush Coffee introduction, we will have informal questions and answers
on anything related to computers and the Internet. Please bring your questions!
We will also have a drawing to give away a retail copy of Adobe
PhotoDeluxe donated by Mike Molloy of Mountain Data Systems. This Windows/Windows95 (CD-ROM)
program includes: more than 500 pictures and designs; dozens of special effects; over 25
built-in activities and ideas for calendars, cards, school projects, and more; and even
allows you to create your own AfterDark slide-show & screen-saver; Adobe Type Manager
and 12 Type 1 Fonts; Adobe Acrobat Reader; and more. You can read about Adobe PhotoDeluxe
at:
http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/photodeluxe/main.html
The program requires a 486 or Pentium; Windows 3.1 or Windows95, at
least 8M RAM, 45M of hard disk space, 256color or greater video, and a CD-ROM drive.
PLEASE NOTE: The regular meeting date and location has been

the month at the Library for June '97 only!

April '97: The Virtual Museum:
Genealogy,
Art, and Museums on the Internet
On Wednesday, April 16, 1997, the EPICUG will meet in the Hondius Room of the Estes Park Public Library at 7:00 P.M. Join us for an evening of
high-tech historical fun as Mike Molloy and Lee Lasson give a presentation about Museums, History, Art and Genealogy on the Internet.
First, Lee will discuss the internet and the world wide web (WWW), both what they are
and how they work. He will talk about the history and beginnings of the internet/web and
how they have evolved into fastest growing communications medium in history.
Next, Mike will build on Lee's discussion about the web and talk about how art,
science, & natural history museums, historical and genealogical societies use the web
to enhance their ability to exhibit historical and cultural artifacts, educate physical
and virtual museum patrons, and share historical information. Their presentation will be
presented via the web itself, and they will visit a number of different web sites during
their presentation.

March '97: How to Get Free Tech Support on the Web
On Wednesday, March 19, 1997, the EPICUG will meet in the Hondius Room of the Estes Park Public Library at 7:00 P.M. Mike Molloy, a local web & desktop publishing
consultant, and owner of Mountain Data Systems, will
present "How To Get Free Technical Support on the Web".
The average user usually has 5-10 pieces of hardware, and 10-15 different pieces of
software. The sometimes problematic interaction of the operating system, hardware and
software is complex and time-consuming to troubleshoot. Fortunately, if youre having
a problem, someone else probably is (or has), too, and this makes the Web a very valuable
place to get your tech support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and at virtually no
cost.
Mike will show you how to get help from vendors on the web, where to search for answers
to your technical questions, and how to use web resources like: internet newsgroups,
vendor websites, search engines, FAQs, knowledge bases, tech notes, fax back systems, and
email support. He will also lead a discussion about how to install patches and update
files you download; how to decide if you should install an update, and other technical
support issues brought up by meeting attendees.
If you can't make the meeting, Mike's presentation
is already on the web. If you're attending, you may want to print out the presentation and
use it to make notes.

On Wednesday, February 19, 1997 EPICUG will meet in the Hondius Room of
the Estes Park Library at 7:00 P.M. Lee Lasson, an area network consultant and owner of
Estes Park On-Line, will facilitate the February meeting. Lee will lead the discussion
topic "Everything about Email." Email is the number one most used application on
the Internet. Learn about and share your experiences with email. The discussion will
include the Do's and Don'ts of Email, how it works behind the scenes on the mail server,
and how to troubleshoot email problems. We will look at the configuration and features of
email software packages like Eudora, Microsoft Internet Mail, Netscape Mail, and Pegasus
Mail. We will also discuss email auto responders, email lists, and newsgroups.
