December 1999 Meeting: Holiday Social

FrontDesk, Inc. provided food, refreshments, and decorations for the group. The group socialized, had a trivia contest ala Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, MCed by Michael Stone, and a "Best URL" contest. Several prizes were given away, including copies of Norton Anti-Virus donated by Estes Park On-Line, a Gift Certificate from Rocky Mountain Rechargers, and others. November 1999 Meeting: Online Banking

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will host an interesting presentation on the current state of online banking for ordinary consumers at its regular meeting in the Hondius Room of the Estes Park Public Library on Tuesday, November 16th, at 7:00 PM.

Ms. Cathy Hinkle, Sales Manager at the Key Bank in Estes Park will demonstrate Key Bank’s online banking system available to ordinary consumers through the Internet. Cathy will present a “behind the scenes” background of Key Bank’s online banking project, a massive Internet undertaking. She will discuss the online banking features with special attention to the security aspects of online banking, an issue of considerable concern as we move into the e-commerce era. Along with the presentation, Cathy will demonstrate the online features with an actual demo connection to Key Bank’s system.

Most pundits regard e-commerce as the Next Big Thing. Be sure and attend this meeting to see how you can take part in the Internet wave.

October 1999 Meeting: The Care and Feeding of Your Printer

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will host an interesting presentation on the care and feeding of common computer printers at its regular meeting in the Hondius Room of the Estes Park Public Library on Thursday, October 21st, at 7:00 PM.

Mr. Gerry Swank, the Chief Charger of Rocky Mountain Rechargers, will bring several styles and models of printers to the meeting and will discuss the features and issues of inkjet printers and laser printers. He will also discuss the important issue of the types of paper that can be used for each type of printer and will demonstrate the different results obtainable from printing on the various paper types.

But wait! There's more! Mr. Swank will also discuss routine maintenance and cleaning techniques that you should employ to keep your printer running at peak efficiency. He will also point out common defects and problems that may occur and will offer tips to recognize and deal with these problems. The group is invited to bring sample printouts that may represent potential problems and let Mr. Swank examine and comment on them.

September 1999 Meeting: Powerplant Tour

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will enjoy a special tour of the Estes Park hydroelectric plant on Tuesday, September 14th, at 5:00 PM.

IMPORTANT: The group will NOT meet at the library as usual. Instead, the group should meet at the powerplant at 5:00 for the tour.

The group will be given a special tour that focuses on the computers, networks, and telecommunications features of the facility in addition to the electrical generation functions. Further details on the plant may be obtained by examining the website at http://www.gp.usbr.gov/power/estespwr.htm.

August 1999 Meeting: An Access 97 Quickstart

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will meet Thursday, August 19th, at 7:00 PM at the Hondius Room in the Estes Park Public Library. Dennis Minard, a resident of Estes Park who teaches Access 97 courses at CSU, will enlighten us on the mysteries of Microsoft’s relational database program known as Access 97. There will be ample time after the presentation to discuss topics of interest to the audience.

During the presentation, Dennis will cover some of the more popular Access 97 topics including:

1) Tables: a) Quick review on how to create them; b) How to build relationships

2) Forms: a) How to build them; b) How to filter/sort records within them; c) How to imbed things like pictures to enhance them

3) Reports: a) How to build them; b) How to edit them; c) How to control page breaks

4) Macros: a) How to build them; b) How to connect them to command buttons on forms

July 1999 Meeting: Newspapers in the Internet Era

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will meet Tuesday, July 20th, at 7:00 PM at the Estes Park Trail Gazette office, 251 Moraine Avenue. The group will participate in a tour of the newspaper offices to see how computers are used to prepare a newspaper. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of intranets and LANs to exchange information within the office and the use of the Internet and email to exchange information outside of the office.

Important Note: The meeting will NOT start at the library as usual. Instead, we will assemble at the newspaper office for the tour. After the tour, the group will reconvene at the Hondius Room in the Estes Park Public Library. At the library, we will be reviewing an important survey form that will guide Dennis Minard’s presentation on Access 97 during the upcoming August meeting.

June '99 Meeting: Shortcuts to Productivity

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will meet Thursday, June 17th, at 7:00 PM in the Hondius Room at the Estes Park Public Library.

Mike Molloy, EPICUG president, local resident, and owner of Mountain Data Systems, will talk about "Shortcuts to Productivity" a presentation and demonstration on how to use various techniques and tools to speed up common computer tasks. He will also talk about keyboard and mouse shortcuts in various applications and built-in and add-on utilities and macros to automate tasks in applications.

Mike has been using computers since 1972 and describes himself as "lazy" which explains why he's always looking for an easier/faster way to get work done. In his consulting business, Mike uses and recommends a variety of tools and utilities to enhance productivity in web and desktop publishing, systems and application development, and small business operation.

Discussion topics will include: What's a shortcut (small arrow pointer on icon); Add shortcuts to Startup folder; Add shortcuts to desktop; Changing a shortcut with properties; Shortcuts to disks/folders on desktop; Assigning hotkeys to shortcuts; Use Start|Documents for recently used docs; Use recent doc list; Keyboard shortcuts (and Windows key); Mouse right click, Alt-Enter; MS Office Shortcut Bar; Software Designs Toolbar; AutoCorrect features in Word; Macros; templates and text boilerplate; Stationary and shortcuts; RoboType; Winkey (extends Windows key); QuicKey; Timesavers in IE5 (autocompletion, password memory); URL shortcuts (bookmarks, desktop); Right-Click print document; Find doc and double click to open, and more as time permits.

May '99 Meeting: The Town of Estes Park’s
Experiences with Y2K (so far)

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will meet Tuesday, May 18th, at 7:00 PM in the Hondius Room at the Estes Park Public Library. We are pleased to have Randy Repola, Assistant Town Administrator, who will discuss the technical aspects of the Y2K eradication program now being undertaken by Estes Park. The talk will focus on the technical lessons learned and some of the approaches the town has undertaken as they prepare for the Millennium.

After the presentation, Mr. Repola will join the group in discussing ideas being offered by the EPICUG group for a plan to help Estes Park citizens check out their own computers for Y2K problems. The Y2K checkout plan is being formulated now. Further announcements regarding the checkout plan will be forthcoming during the summer.

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group (EPICUG) will meet Tuesday, April 27th 7:00 PM in the Hondius Room at the Estes Park Public Library. This month we will continue to discuss Y2K. Bring your questions, concerns, and knowledge as we expose the Y2K issue for what it really is and what it will mean to you. Do you need to worry?

The Estes Park Internet Computer User Group, Inc. will elect new officers and vote on Don Widrig's Proposed Bylaws which will amend our current bylaws Tuesday, April 27th 7:00 PM in the Hondius Room at the Estes Park Public Library.
